government and royal governors
Mentioned many times above after the trustee period King George II turned Georgia into a royal colony.
He appointed 3 governors: John Reynolds: the first governor of Georgia was a Naval Captain, extremely unpopular and confrontational. Henry Ellis: Under Ellis Georgia learned how to self govern, budget , and defense. Ellis was an explorer prior to being a governor, was popular with the Indians, legislature, and the colonists, but despite all this he had poor health. James Wright: out of all the governors James was most popular and successful. He also built a good relationship with the colonial legislature, negotiated treaties with the Natives, and opened millions of acres for settlement. Georgia prospered and grew faster under him than anyone else |
